Prioritizing your safety during covidDuring the pandemic, my number one priority has been the safety and wellbeing of my constituents. My office has worked with many of you to resolve the issues that arise during a global pandemic: securing resources like food and health care, fixing issues with your unemployment applications, helping your business apply for financial aid, working with the DMV to get your car registered, and more. It is during a crisis that we need government help and services most.
Subsequently, my colleagues and I have advocated for you with the Governor and his administration. I am proud to say that because of these efforts, we have expanded tele-medicine, brought additional COVID-19 testing sites to our community, opened a COVID-19 recovery center at Silver Hill Hospital, expanded affordable childcare options for front-line workers, and delayed due dates for state income and municipal property taxes. If there are more ways that we can make state government work better for you, please let me know. |
While we continue to be guided by public health experts on safely re-opening, we also have an opportunity to build a stronger, more robust state. I look forward to finding creative avenues to rebuild our state.
I am more focused than ever on our state’s fiscal health as we have a $1.87B deficit directly related to COVID-19 for Fiscal Year 21. I am relieved the legislature preserved the state’s rainy day fund of $2.8B to allot toward our state’s recovery, and we actually ended Fiscal Year 20 with a $39M surplus. Connecticut has been allocated $1.4B of the Federal Coronavirus Relief Fund to cover out-of-pocket COVID-19 expenses for the state and municipalities. We are still waiting for the Federal Government’s funding to offset revenue loss related to the economic downturn, which will be Congress’s responsibility. These additional resources will help minimize the COVID-19 impact on our state’s budget.
